About Our Area
Providence, a friendly city of 173,000, boasts an active arts and theater community, as well as universities and museums that add to the city's rich cultural offerings. Renovation of the city's waterfront with parks, office space and upscale shopping has led to our "Renaissance City" nickname. And Providence County offers 1,200 acres of public parks and miles of bike paths winding through the waterfront and wildlife preserves.
Rhode Island is within easy traveling distance of several major northeast cities:
56 miles from Boston
180 miles from New York City
under 350 miles from Montreal
Amtrak's High Speed Rail in downtown Providence has cut travel time to Boston to 30 minutes, and to just 2 hours and 25 minutes for New York City.
The state offers a high standard of living and much natural beauty packed into just 1214 square miles. Sixty percent of that is covered by woodlands, and there are over 400 miles of coastline offering beaches of every variety. There are professional sports franchises (baseball and hockey) as well as a full college sports scene.
And only 48 miles from border to border means activities, historic sites, and world-class restaurants are just a short drive away.
