Emergency Physician and Assistant ED Director - Heywood Healthcare

Job Description

Heywood Healthcare is an independent two hospital system in north central Massachusetts consisting of Heywood Hospital in Gardner and Athol Hospital in Athol. We are currently seeking one well-qualified BE/BC emergency physician to fill a permanent position and an emergency physician to fill the administrative role of Assistant Director of Emergency Medicine.



Heywood has a new 21 bed ED which sees 27,000 patients per year and includes a fast track service. There is a robust mid-level provider program which provides 24 hours of coverage per day. The ED has an exceptional and collegial nursing staff. The hospital has an adult ICU, pediatric unit, adult psychiatric unit, geriatric psychiatric unit and wound clinic. There is 24/7 specialist coverage in cardiology, OB/GYN, orthopedics, general surgery and pediatrics as well as a strong hospitalist service. EPs work a combination of 8, 9 and 12 hour shifts.



Athol is a critical access hospital with an 8 bed ED which sees 11,000 patients per year. A brand new ED is scheduled to begin construction in April, 2016. EPs work 12 hours shifts with the option to work 24 hour shifts.



The emergency departments at Heywood Healthcare offer the following:

- Direct bedding of patients with bedside triage and registration

- Elimination of oral contrast for most abdominal/pelvis CTs

- Ability to schedule low-risk chest pain patients for an outpatient stress test within 72 hours of discharge from the ED

- Implementation of protocols and practice guidelines for stroke, STEMI, sepsis, DKA and pain management

- PA and medical students rotating through the ED

- New ultrasound machine

- The option of a benefited part-time position (1040 hours per year)

- Flexible scheduling





The opportunity exists to work at one or both sites with flexible annual hours. We are offering a very competitive compensation package which includes a base rate plus twice yearly bonuses, malpractice, health, dental and disability insurance, retirement plan and CME allowance.



The hospitals are located within 1.5 hours of Boston and just ten minutes away from skiing and hiking at Mt. Wachusett.
