Cherry Hospital is an accredited State psychiatric hospital located in Goldsboro, NC, serving the residents of eastern region of the state. Here, at Cherry Hospital, acute and chronic patients are admitted for short term and long term hospitalization. The Medical Physician works with the patient's psychiatrist to provide medical consultations, diagnosis and treatment for non-psychiatric illnesses. Cherry Hospital has a Medical Psychiatric Unit (MPU) which is a unit designed to care for Cherry Hospital patients requiring acute and higher levels of medical care. The MPU has a scope similar to a general hospital medical floor including the availability of cardiac telemetry. The case load overall for Medical Service physicians is very reasonable and very few procedures are needed. Position requires collaboration with patient's psychiatrist, treatment team and other hospital professionals as needed to provide medical care service coordination for patients. The Medical Physician is also required to supervise medical advanced practice clinicians (physician assistants/nurse practitioners) routinely. Work is usually eight hour shifts Monday through Friday with most State holidays off (unless on call). The medical physician staff rotates being on call and receives an incentive compensation in addition to regular salary. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:

*Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
*Demonstrated proficiency in providing screening medical exams, primary care and urgent care to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients in accordance to standards of care.
*Demonstrated ability to give impressions of x-rays (prior to being read by radiologist).
*Demonstrated ability to supervise advanced practice clinicians and the occasional medical student or resident.
*Demonstrated ability to staff a unit with the scope of a general hospital medical floor.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of North Carolina and Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine.
Management Prefers: Experience with psychiatric or substance abuse populations desirable but not mandatory.
Degrees must be from an appropriately accredited institution.
