Job Description
The Clinical Decision Unit is an 8 bed patient care area. The unit is staffed 24/7 by Emergency Services staff. Emergency Service- CDU RNs will be oriented to assist in the ED when CDU census is low. They will not take an ED assignment when assisting. The unit is considered an extension of the ED and is part of Emergency Services. Patient place in this unit are usually discharged in 24 hours, have a lower acuity and longer length of stay compared to the general ED population. Diagnosis of patients in the CDU can include renal calculi, hyperemesis, chest pain, abdominal pain, pain management and dehydration. All series that are available to the in-house patients are available to CDU patients including testing required for disposition. CDU patients are cared for by an Emergency Department PA/NP in collaboration with the ED attending physician.
The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible for the planning, implementing and evaluation of care for a given patient population with the established standards and practices of Crouse Hospital. This process is enacted through direct clinical practice, management of patient care and general professional duties.
Required: IF HIRED OR LICENSED AFTER 1/1/2017:
Graduate of an accredited Nursing degree. MUST complete BSN (Bachelors in Nursing within 8 years of hire date into the Registered Nurse position). Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. Minimum of one (1) year of recent Adult Med/Surg or Adult ICU experience within the last 5 years. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire or within 2 weeks after hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification must be obtained within one (1) year of the hire date, if deemed necessary for the position based on the scope of the assigned role. Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certification for Registered Nurses working in the Kienzle Family Maternity Center must be obtained by the end of orientation.
Preferred: Certification in a specialty area.
