Job Description

Responsibilities
Perform a wide variety of testing in the areas of STAT/routine Hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, immunoassays, Blood Bank, microbiology, specimen processing and phlebotomy by following standard procedures.
Operate semi-automated and automated equipment and perform calibration procedures, periodic operator maintenance tasks, troubleshooting procedures to identify the cause of malfunctions, and corrective actions to resolve the identified malfunctions.
Perform a variety of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in the Department of Pathology in support of direct patient care (inpatient and outpatient).
Perform daily (or as required) quality control procedures for ensuring the acceptability of all testing systems.
Perform required quality control procedures for ensuring the acceptability of testing systems. There is often a need for the performance of a number of additional tasks or tests because of the results of the early phases or stages of the analysis.
Evaluate control data to ensure the data is within acceptable norms and meets other screening criteria as specified before releasing patient results.
Work independently during work hours that are outside of normal business hours. (second and third shifts)
Maintain accurate records utilizing Levy Jennings charts and ensure all QC results fall within established control limits prior to releasing patient results.

Conditions of Employment
This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain within six months of employment a valid Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting the Medical Technologist with performing non-complex laboratory testing in the areas of routine hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, serology, immunoassays, Blood Bank, microbiology, specimen processing or phlebotomy; recognizing conditions which cause erroneous laboratory test results; AND utilizing blood bank systems such as the Laboratory Information System or the Defense Blood Standard System.
OR
Education: One full academic year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Biological Technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
