Job Description

This is a non-benefitted position with flexible hours up to 40 hours per week.

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC) is located in the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles, California and serves much of the San Fernando and Antelope Valley community. It provides an array of primary and specialty care services in both an outpatient and inpatient capacity. The center has 377 inpatient beds, a 30-bed isolation unit, an 18 bed ICU, and an Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. OVMC has an affiliation with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. OVMC is committed to high quality care and is a national leader in clinical research.

Olive View-UCLA is recruiting a pediatrician to join the academic inpatient and urgent care team. This position provides the opportunity to join the UCLA faculty and engage in daily teaching and training of medical students and residents from UCLA programs.

The role will include inpatient and urgent care for children of all ages, including foster youth, and it will also include the opportunity to care for newborns in the peri-partum period and at hospital discharge visits in the first weeks of life.

-The primary care and urgent care clinics serves patients 0-20 years old, and has a large population of Spanish speaking families. There is a group of about 6 pediatric primary care providers, and a group of 3 urgent care providers. We have a diverse department with multiple sub-specialists (endo, pulmonology, GI, derm, A&I, rheum, surgery, etc). We also have support services available like social work, community health workers, care managers/coordinators.

-The inpatient service operates similar to a teaching community hospital, caring for patients aged 0-20 years old receiving treatment for common pediatric pathologies such as dehydration, post-appendectomy, or mild to moderate asthma exacerbations. Similar to the outpatient setting, we have multiple sub-specialties available for consults including pulmonology, GI, term, A&I, rheumatology, surgery, ortho, plastic surgery, and cardiology. Currently, there is a group of 4 pediatricians who rotate at varying degrees to cover a mix of weekdays and weekends.


Inpatient and Urgent Care Pediatric Responsibilities:

-Teach and precept those in training, including resident physicians, medical students, and nurse practitioner students.
-Evaluate undifferentiated patients presenting for unscheduled and on-demand care in the Olive View Medical Center Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic. Patients 0-20 years of age are seen in our urgent care clinic.
-Work up urgent/emergent medical conditions including chest pain, abdominal pain, headaches, respiratory illnesses, orthopedic injuries, rashes, and other presentations.
-Perform basic procedures including: laceration repair, suture and staple removal, abscess incision and drainage, closed fracture splinting, removal of foreign bodies embedded superficially in skin, felon/paronychia drainage, epistaxis control measures, bladder catheterization, ingrown toe nail removal, and other procedures providers may feel comfortable performing.
-Manage low-acuity pediatric inpatients with admission diagnoses including neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, BRUE, neonatal sepsis, pyelonephritis, appendicitis, asthma exacerbation, bronchiolitis, dehydration, constipation, and other diagnoses.
-Address routine health maintenance needs of patients empaneled to the Los Angeles Department of Health Services, such as administering vaccinations and ensuring appropriate health screening.
-Provide continuity care when patients have not been able to access their primary care doctors including refilling and titrating medications and managing chronic health conditions including asthma, diabetes, and other health conditions routinely managed by primary care physicians.
-Coordinate referrals for patients to specialty care or other ancillary services including social work, behavioral health, health education, medicolegal services, substance use disorder treatment, and other wrap around services to comprehensively address patient health needs.
-Accurately identify patients who require a higher level of care and assist in organizing transfer of these patients to appropriate care environments, including communicating with EMS staff and/or emergency department staff to facilitate transfers.
-Assess patients for psychiatric emergencies, including identifying when a patient may be a possible danger to themselves, others, or gravely disabled requiring psychiatric evaluation to place the patient on an involuntary hold.
-Full-time physicians are also encouraged to help participate in quality improvement and system improvement work to maximize the efficiency, value, impact, and positive patient experience of the care we deliver


Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties* or equivalent training**. Prefer physicians residency trained in pediatrics or internal medicine / pediatrics.

LICENSE:

California State Physician and Surgeons Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.

OVMC is located in the city of Sylmar, which is a part of the San Fernando Valley. The population, as of 2009, is approximately 90,000 residents. The citys neighboring cities are San Fernando and Santa Clarita. The Olive View hospital has been part of the neighborhood since 1920, when it initially served as a tuberculosis (TB) sanatorium.
