Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC) is located in the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles, California and serves much of the San Fernando and Antelope Valley community. It provides an array of primary and specialty care services in both an outpatient and inpatient capacity. The center has 377 inpatient beds, a 30-bed isolation unit, an 18 bed ICU, and an Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. OVMC has an affiliation with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. OVMC is committed to high quality care and is a national leader in clinical research.
Olive View-UCLA is recruiting a pediatrician to join the academic inpatient and urgent care team. This position provides the opportunity to join the UCLA faculty and engage in daily teaching and training of medical students and residents from UCLA programs.
The role will include inpatient and urgent care for children of all ages, including foster youth, and it will also include the opportunity to care for newborns in the peri-partum period and at hospital discharge visits in the first weeks of life.
The primary care and urgent care clinics serves patients 0-20 years old, and has a large population of Spanish speaking families. There is a group of about 6 pediatric primary care providers, and a group of 3 urgent care providers. We have a diverse department with multiple sub-specialists (endo, pulmonology, GI, derm, A&I, rheum, surgery, etc). We also have support services available like social work, community health workers, care managers/coordinators.
Primary Care Pediatric Responsibilities:
-Provide comprehensive acute, chronic, and preventative care to patients under 21 years of age. Involve parents and caregivers in this care. Provide appropriate education to patients and their family members to carry out treatment plans effectively.
-Perform all duties associated with direct patient care activities: Review and act upon diagnostic test results as appropriate; ensure patients are aware of test results; document acknowledgement of results and actions taken in patients ORCHID record.
-Perform CHDP exams, addressing immunizations, growth, and development
-Close care gaps identified in ORCHIDs Health Maintenance tab.
-Respond within 3 business days to ORCHID Inbox messages, proposed orders, and notifications from other DHS staff; some orders may require a prompt response (e.g., medication renewals)
-Communicate with specialists as appropriate via eConsult. As clinically appropriate, carry out specialists recommendations and close eConsults in a timely fashion.
-Communicate patient care priorities, especially follow-up plans that involve non-providers (e.g., high-risk patients that need Care Manager follow-up), to medical home team members
-Lead multidisciplinary family conferences for high-risk, complex cases as needed.
-Refer patients to appropriate resources as indicated by screening for social and behavioral determinants of health
-Participate in team huddle (AKA Daily Brief) before the first clinical session of the day to review day-of-care plan for scheduled patients
-Document all patient encounters in the electronic record on the day of the visit.
-Follow up with patients as clinically indicated. Respond to patient complaints and grievances in a timely fashion.
-Teach and precept those in training, including resident physicians, medical students, and nurse practitioner students.
Primary Care Assigned Duties:
-Participate in departmental PCMH operations and clinical quality team meetings.
-Lead and present on assigned quality improvement efforts including operational, clinical quality, and pay-for-performance metrics.
-Provide direct care services or outreach to address priority clinical service backlogs and gaps.
-Participate in team meetings, learning and didactic sessions as assigned.
-Other duties assigned as needed by Primary Care Director
For the interested applicant, this position also has the potential to work in the pediatric inpatient wards, newborn nursery, and/or pediatric urgent care clinic.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties* or equivalent training**. Prefer physicians residency trained in pediatrics or internal medicine / pediatrics.
LICENSE:
California State Physician and Surgeons Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
OVMC is located in the city of Sylmar, which is a part of the San Fernando Valley. The population, as of 2009, is approximately 90,000 residents. The citys neighboring cities are San Fernando and Santa Clarita. The Olive View hospital has been part of the neighborhood since 1920, when it initially served as a tuberculosis (TB) sanatorium.
