Job Description

Incumbents in these positions are licensed physicians that have immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit of a medical facility or a small program of a medical facility.
The Supervising MH Psychiatrist position in correctional setting offers a challenging and an exciting mix of responsibilities.
Working with the Chief Physician, the SMHP oversees delivery of psychiatric care to the inmates in this setting. He/she is tasked with the responsibility of creating appropriate workflows and also creating and maintain a workforce that is able to achieve an execution of these workflows with a goal to bring care delivery to its highest efficiency. He/she is responsible for determining the staffing needs, hiring staff, maintaining staff, and managing schedules of various personnel that he/she supervises e.g. psychiatrist and nurses. A SMHP reviews performances of assigned staff and provides remedial guidance if necessary and also supervises patient care provided by psychiatrists, nurses and trainees. A SMHP plays an integral role in formulating policies for Correctional Health Services and directly oversees the implementation of the policies. This includes fulfilling various Department of Justice provisions.
A SMHP collaborates with custody personnel and physical health team to co-ordinate various aspects of psychiatric care in a correctional setting.
An important task of a SMHP is to prepare and review reports to identify areas that need improvement. He/she monitors the measures that have been identified as target goals in these areas.
A SMHP works to keep the morale of the work force high and the team effective.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in Psychiatry -AND- Three years of experience in medical practice, post residency training, teaching, or investigative work.
LICENSE:
California State Physician and Surgeons Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.

5.5% for assignment in a Sheriffs County Jail mental health facility
5.5% for AMA Board Certification in Psychiatry
