Job Description

Under the general direction of the HMS Provider on-duty, provides patient services by using imaging modalities, performing radiographic procedures and applying principles of radiation protection. Develops radiographs and evaluates for technical quality. Exercises professional judgment in the performance of procedures. Recognizes patients conditions requiring immediate action and can initiate life support measures.


1. Performs diagnostic radiographic procedures; operates imaging equipment, computer and other assistive devices.
2. Travel to and provide coverage for radiographic procedures at any HMS site, as directed by supervisor, as needed to support patient care delivery.
3. Follows prescribed techniques in administering general and specific x-rays. Adjusts equipment, calculates exposure factors, positions and immobilizes patients as necessary, uses appropriate lead shielding and selects proper screen/film combination and size.
4. Evaluates radiographs for technical qualities.
5. Observes patient and equipment during procedure and immediately reports unusual equipment occurrences to Administrator, Provider and S.W. Medical, as well as documenting any patient reactions or problems.
6. Assumes care for physical needs of the patient during examination and procedures.
7. Maintains vendor files and other reports related to the department.
8. Assists Providers with researching test results on referral patients.
9. Provides protection to patients, family members and self in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards.
10. Cleans area, maintains radiology stock supply levels through inventory control and requisitioning.
11. Assumes responsibility for portions of the Quality Control and Assurance Programs.
12. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and reading current literature.
