Job Description

SUMMARY: Cares for patients in the hospital, or other medical facility, under direction of nursing and/or physicians, by performing the following duties. Provides exceptional service and/or care to all patients, customers and team members. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Demonstrates clinical competency in his/her area of practice • Organizes duties in order of priority and demand • Assists with the preparation of instruments, supplies, and equipment for the planned procedure • Participates in the universal protocol/time-out procedure • Demonstrates knowledge and preparedness for patient’s needs based on age-related criteria • Assists with patient preparation and draping of the operative/procedural site • Assists in monitoring and controlling environment, noise, and traffic flow • Operates mechanical, electrical, and air powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions; removes malfunctioning equipment from use and follows appropriate procedure for removal from patient care area and communicates malfunction by describing what is not working properly to those that need information • Monitors and maintains integrity of sterile field at all times and communicates any break in aseptic technique to nurse • Handles specimens according to hospital policy • Follows hospital policy and/or nurses’ direction regarding counting of sharps/instruments and sponges • Communicates any patient safety concerns to nurse • Anticipates needs of surgical field and requests supplies in a timely manner • Labels all medication in sterile fields according to policy and procedure • Minimizes turnover by initiating activities as needed, i.e. cleaning floor, wiping furniture, etc. • Observes and reports skin color and integrity upon removal of bovie and positioning pads as applicable • Assists in the organization and updating of preference cards • Collaborates with team to restock room and remove excess supplies and equipment • Makes efficient use of down time, seeks out work, willing to work on special projects • Demonstrates consistent and appropriate use of engineering controls, work practice controls, and personal protective equipment as directed by OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen Standard • Maintains a neat and clean patient environment • Performs other duties as required Education/Training/Experience • Graduate from an accredited school of Surgical Technology preferred • On the job experience in the role of a surgical technologist in OR, L& D, OR and/or cath lab.
