Residency Program
All new graduates are placed into our 18 month new graduate residency program.  The residency is a paid program and all residents are employed by Lurie Children’s. This innovative and unique program assists new graduates to become clinically competent, critical thinking clinicians.  The upcoming residency cohorts begin in September 2019 and January 2020.

  • Curriculum
    • Education is provided by experienced Respiratory Therapists, physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists and other disciplines.
    • 5 months of extended clinical, classroom and simulation training focused on the care of critically ill children and neonates.
      • 80%; One on one precepted training in all of our clinical areas (NICU, PICU, CCU, general care, PACU, OR, ED and more)
      • 20%; Classroom, lab and Simulation education (physiology, pediatric patient assessment, disease management, mechanical ventilation strategies, pharmacology, ECMO and much more!
    • Enrollment in our evidence based practice program. Participants receive education on reading, interpreting and conducting research and quality improvement. Over the course of 12 months, participants develop create and conduct a quality improvement project.
  • Outcomes and Success
    • Our first cohort (2017) of new graduate residents completed their 5 month education component in January of 2018 and have been positively impacting the lives of the children we serve. They are working in our CCU, PICU and general care areas.  Each of them successfully challenged the NBRC Neonatal and Pediatric Specialty exam last year, earning them the right to call themselves RRT-NPS!
    • This team has also completed and presented their evidence based practice project focused on the impact and practices associated with suctioning of artificial airways in critical ill pediatric patients.
    • Our 2018 cohort of new graduates have just completed their training and are now transitioning to caring for patients.

Neonatal and Pediatric Resuscitation (NRP) certification must be obtained within two (2) years of start date in position. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Healthcare/Medical - Respiratory Therapy (RRT & CRTT). Solid understanding of all aspects of Respiratory Care.

Essential Functions:

  • Effectively evaluate the results of patient respiratory care delivered per care plans.
  • Accurately introduces, administers and charts the effects of routine respiratory therapy and medication administration.
  • Accurately setup, maintain, and chart the usage of oxygen therapy, aerosol/humidity therapy and ventilator therapy.
  • Provide ventilator support and airway management to neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric populations.
  • Perform arterial blood gas and capillary blood gas analysis (following Medical Director approval). Participates and performs blood gas quality controls per regulatory standards. Participates in blood gas proficiency studies.
  • May be trained in endotracheal intubation and arterial line insertion. May take a charge role.
  • Completes assessments on ventilator patients and all other patients on respiratory care services.
  • Will accurately chart on the respiratory flow sheets in the EMR and on the care plans. Will also charge accurately in the EMR.
  • Processes and maintains respiratory equipment.
  • Evaluates patients for routine respiratory care therapy on the inpatient units
  • Evaluates patients for routine respiratory care therapy for patient in the Emergency room.
  • Evaluates patient Evaluates patients for advanced respiratory care therapy for patients in the ICU's
  • Participates on all Transport teams. PEDS and Adult
  • Obtains and analyses blood gases.. Arterial, Venous and Capillary
  • Assist cleaning respiratory care related equipment
  • Assist with stocking respiratory care related supplies on the inpatient care units

- FTE .9 is three (3) - 12 hour night shifts per week with an every 3rd weekend rotation.

New employees, hired forNIGHT shift RCP and who have at least 2 years related RCP experience, are eligible for a Sign-On Bonus of up to $6,000.

In addition, for any level of experience, a RCP NIGHT shift bonus of up to $2000 annually is available.

Provides therapeutic, diagnostic, consultative and supportive services for neonatal through adult patients and their families. Actively participates in resuscitative and emergent situations. Functions within professional and hospital standards.

Current License by the State of Wisconsin as a Respiratory Care Practitioner with current Certified Respiratory Therapist credential.

Must obtain RRT within 6 months of hire and remain current with credential.

Current CPR certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart or American Red Cross is required.

Transport-RCP – full-time FTE .9 Nights:

The Transport Respiratory Care Practitioner (TRCP) provides patient care in a mobile environment to high risk patients and their families being transported to/from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.  This position requires a respiratory care practitioner who has demonstrated competencies and advanced clinical knowledge in the respiratory care practices.  The TRCP is responsible for providing quality assessment, therapeutic interventions, and clinical expertise to the neonatal/pediatric/adult population in the transport environment.  The TRCP in conjunction with the Transport Nurse Clinician (TNC) acts as a resource hospital wide for patient care standards and pre-code recognition.

Patient care is provided in accordance with established policy and procedures, medical protocols, and/or direct on-line consultation with the appropriate medical control physician within the transport environment (ambulance, helicopter, fixed wing).  The TRCP must be able to prioritize, evaluate, and manage multiple patient needs through critical thinking skills in an ever changing environment.

Current License by the State of Wisconsin as a Respiratory Care Practitioner with current Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and RRT credentials. Requires 3 - 5 years’ experience in Respiratory Care, including 2 -3 years of critical care experience in neonatal, pediatric, or adult critical care ICU experience.

Acquires and maintains:  Joint Commission requirements, NRP, PALS and ACLS certification. Current CPR certification - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart or American Red Cross is required.

Must pass pre-placement physical exam and meet health requirements for flying within the physical capacity evaluation prior to hire and annually. Transport team must meet height requirements of not greater than 6ft 2in., not less than 4 ft 10 in. Respiratory Therapist

We have openings for Respiratory Therapists to join our team. As a professional, provide therapeutic, supportive and diagnostic respiratory services and care, based on established standards, to Clara Maass Medical Center patients. The incumbent in this role will work to restore patients’ pulmonary function, alleviate pain, and support life by planning and administering medically prescribed respiratory therapy.

You Will:

  • Interview and examine patients regarding their respiratory ailments.
  • Diagnose respiratory ailments, test patient’s lung capacities.
  • Examine test results and identify issues.
  • Remove mucus and other fluids from patient’s lungs.
  • Clear patient’s airways of physical obstructions.
  • Educate patients on lung health and disease prevention.
  • Instruct patients on the proper use of equipment & or respiratory care procedures.
  • Provide emergency resuscitation in cases of ceased breathing.
  • Determine patient treatment plans with supervising physician.
  • Comply with all required safety and infection control procedures.
  • Demonstrate respect for Resident's beliefs and property.

You Are:

In addition to the specific duties and responsibilities described above, the ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Adept at the scientific principles underlying cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, as well as biomedical engineering and technology.
  • Able to effectively assess, educate and treat patients with cardiopulmonary disorders.
  • Detail-oriented therefore ensures that patients are receiving the correct treatment.
  • Very organized, keeps and collects records of patient’s condition.
  • A problem-solver, and can evaluate patients test results and symptoms.
  • Amazing with people, work well with physicians and team-oriented environments.

You Have:

  • Graduated from AMA approved Respiratory Therapy program.
  • Certified or Registered as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • A current New Jersey Respiratory Care license
  • Previous clinical experience.
  • Knowledge of respiratory equipment function.

  • Maintained required BLS Heart Saver/Health Care Provider course completion status.

Responsibilities

  • Performs mechanical ventilator management Bi-Pap and respiratory monitoring. The therapist under emergency conditions may be required to independently provide to machines in conjunction with blood gas studies and ventilator data.

JOB SUMMARY:
Activities include but are not limited to the provisions of diagnostic cardiology and neurology services. Also provides for routine department related clerical functions. Is responsible for assessing and educating patients across the lifespan from neonates to geriatrics with cardiology and neurology diseases and illnesses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform 12 lead ECG’s per departmental policy.
  2. Perform cardiac stress testing with/without cardiolyte component per department
    procedure.
  3. In conjunction with the nuclear medicine department, perform persantine procedure.
  4. Insert and maintain INT and IV access in patients requiring such.
  5. Assist in EEG testing.
  6. Perform holter monitoring and analysis.
  7. Order cardiology related supplies.
  8. Stock ECG machines and respiratory supplies on each floor daily.
  9. Perform 24 hour blood pressure monitoring and analysis.
  10. Perform event monitors and analysis.
  11. Provide for routine department related clerical function, department reports (H.M.S.
    system), photocopying, fax usage, and utilize the full scope of H.M.S. order entry services.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development over the life span and possess the
    ability to assess data reflective of patient’s status as well as relate interpersonally with all
    age groups in order to identify each patients care requirements.
  13. Assist with data collection and input relative to the CQI process.
  14. Perform such related duties not listed herein but deemed in the best interest of the
    department and NMMC.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Associates Degree, Certified Respiratory Therapist, CPR certified

WORKERS TRAITS:

  • Ability to work unsupervised and relate professionally with other hospital staff.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to the advantage of the patients and physicians.
  • Computer skills a plus as related to diagnostic equipment.

JOB SUMMARY

Cares for the Cardio-Pulmonary needs of all assigned patients, from those who are undergoing routine diagnostic procedures to those requiring more complex critical care support, intervention, and transport support, as applicable to care setting. The work requires a team focus working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team aimed toward the best outcome for the patient and organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provides respiratory care to include diagnostic testing, oxygen and medication delivery, bronchial hygiene, arterial/capillary blood gas draw and analysis, advanced airway and life support.
  2. Patient assessment including the ability to monitor labs, hemodynamics and radiology findings.  Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individual patient care appropriate to the age of the patients.
  3. Calibrates, cleans, sets up, maintains and troubleshoots all patient related equipment and instruments. Assembles and stores cleaned equipment.
  4. Participates in in-house educational in-services inter and intradepartmental as well as attending outside seminars and work-shops, as requested by Manager.
  5. Participates in various intermittent department tasks including; audits, quality assurance, statistical record keeping, patient charting and other special projects as specified by Manager.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of 2-year AMA-approved Respiratory Care Program; or approved alternative education as outlined in the state regulatory requirements.
  • Must pass the NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist exam within 6 months of hire.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

  • Must maintain a current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license in the state of practice.
  • Must maintain RRT certification (e.g. CEU’s, etc.); exceptions for RCP’s noted above.  Please note may obtain within 6 months of hire to obtain it, per language above under Education section allowing 6 months from date of hire to pass the RRT exam.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at date of hire.
  • Must maintain all certifications, competencies and licensure as required by the department or as regulated by state or federal agencies.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

Hospital or Sleep Center setting:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in acute care as a Respiratory Therapist is preferred.
  • Experience in ICU, Pediatrics, or Obstetrics preferred.

Clinic setting:

  • Minimum of one year of experience in a pulmonary function lab preferred.

OTHER SKILLS:

  • Proficient with MS Office applications
  • Must be able to set up, operate, and trouble shoot all respiratory or pulmonary function related equipment, as applicable, in a quick and efficient manner.
  • Must be able to quickly assess acute, critical care situations and respond with a decisive and appropriate course of action.

We are seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist to:

  • Join our world-class team of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals in providing everything from preventive health care to highly specialized programs.
  • Provide quality care in a compassionate patient- and family- centered environment.
  • Provide Respiratory Care treatments and services to patients.
  • Care for Level III patients including attending deliveries and transporting patients from outlying hospitals and managing their respiratory support.  
  • Supervise the work of other Therapists, technicians or students as needed.
  • Work occasional shifts at SAMC-Belvidere as needed.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and educational experiences in support of departmental philosophy and objectives, as well as, Health System initiatives.

Education:
Graduate of an COARC accredited educational program for Respiratory Care.

Experience/Skills:

  • Two years of recent Level III NICU experience or greater is highly preferred.
  • At least one year experience working as a Respiratory Care Practitioner preferred.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and clearly and calmly communicate in English both verbally and in writing with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools required.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current Registration (RRT credential) from the National Board of Respiratory Care as  Registered Respiratory Therapist. 
  • License from the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (within 90 days of passing test for new grads)
  • Current CPR certification (once trained in the Special Care Nursery).
  • PALS certification required within two years of hire date.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying.

Shifts:
Full-Time and Part-Time 12 hour Night shifts available.
