About the Organization
At Portage Health, improving the health of our community isn't just our job - It's our way of life. We are dedicated to bringing the best people and the best technology together to create an environment conducive to healing and gaining health.
Portage Health has served the people of the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan for more than 110 years. We are dedicated to providing quality, compassionate healthcare in a progressive and integrated environment.
As a community-owned and operated healthcare organization, Portage Health has responded to the call for quality medical care close to home by offering a wide assortment of medical services under one roof. We support a multi-specialty group of more than 36 physicians and have additional subspecialists visit our facilities on a regular basis. Our medical group physicians are located in four clinic locations found throughout the community, and include OB/GYN, family medicine, sports medicine, orthopaedics, general surgery, geriatrics, internal medicine, rheumatology, pathology, anesthesiology, ENT, opthamology, radiology, pediatrics, and neurology.
Having an inpatient unit of 36 beds, acute care patients are served by both family physicians and internal medicine specialists. Portage Health also offers a wide range of ancillary services for our patients including the areas only Open Bore MRI, 64-slice CT scanner, PACS, nuclear imaging, digital mammography and other radiological and laboratory services. Our other services include cardiopulmonary, sleep medicine and a certified sleep disorder lab, regional dialysis unit, hematology and oncology, pharmacy, physical, occupational and speech therapy, cardiac rehab, audiology, a 12/365 hospitalist program, home care and hospice, and a 60-bed senior living community - to name just a few.
In addition, Portage Health's Level III ASC Verified trauma center and Emergency department offers 24 hour physician coverage, staffed by five physicians and 3 allied health professionals. We have also opened an Express Walk-in clinic to better meet the needs of our patients and to improve access to basic healthcare services.
Portage Health collaborates with other community organizations and provide considerable reinvestment into our community to promote a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on preventive care and education through our community health programs.
We strive to best serve our friends and neighbors to ensure their individual and our community's overall health.
Portage Health is located in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. Uniquely positioned in the midst of the area known as the Keweenaw Peninsula, which pierces the southern shoreline of the largest and deepest fresh water lake in the United States. We are surrounded by miles of scenic Lake Superior shoreline, rugged cliffs, and the endless beauty of the northwoods.
Borne out of the copper mining boom of the 1800's, the community of 50,000 people presents a nice blend of historic charm with modern innovation and technology. Portage Health and its employees also benefit from the academic and cultural resources contributed by two local institutions of higher education - Michigan Technological and Finlandia Universities. Our warm, family-oriented community offers excellent, nationally recognized public schools, a thriving arts scene and boundless outdoor recreation opportunities afforded by our four-season climate.
Within many of the city limits in Houghton and Keweenaw counties, you will find world-class recreational opportunities which include alpine ski hills; a comprehensive nordic ski trail system which has hosted several national and regional race events; lakes and streams for boating, fishing, kayaking and simple enjoyment; incredible single-track and back country bike trails; and a snowmobile trail system which traverses some of the most breathtaking and highly acclaimed-scenery in the country. Additionally, the area enjoys several golf courses, state-owned parks, and serves as the gateway to the Isle Royale National Park.
