About the Organization

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children is well recognized as Hawaiis leader in the care of women, infants and children. With 207 beds and 66 bassinets, the nonprofit hospital is Hawaiis only maternity, newborn and pediatric specialty hospital. It is also a tertiary care, medical teaching and research facility. Specialty services for patients throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Region include intensive care for infants and children, 24-hour emergency pediatric care, air transport, maternal fetal medicine, and high-risk perinatal care. More than 1,500 employees and 630 physicians provide specialty care at Kapiolani Medical Center. The hospital is home to Kapiolani Womens Center and Kapiolani Womens Cancer Center - the states only dedicated breast health and gynecological cancer centers. Kapiolani offers numerous community programs and services, such as the Kapiolani Child Protection Center and Sex Abuse Treatment Center. The mission of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children is to improve and advocate for the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents of Hawaii and the Pacific Region.

A History of Caring
Queen Kapiolani founded the Kapiolani Maternity Home in 1890. She held bazaars and luau to raise the $8,000 needed. In 1909, Albert and Emma Wilcox donated the funds to open Kauikeolani Childrens Hospital, a hospital for Hawaiis children envisioned by Dr. James R. Judd and Sanford Dole. In 1978, the two hospitals merged to become Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.

The Campaign for Hawaii's ChildrenA capital campaign to rebuild and expand Kapiolani Medical Center is underway. Co-chairs Bert and Susan Kobayashi, and Dee Jay and Don Mailer are
leading volunteers in an effort to raise $30 million. The Campaign for Hawaiis Children is the largest philanthropic effort in Hawaii for the health care of our keiki and is focused on the first of a multiphased renewal of Kapiolani. For more information visit www.kapiolanigift.org.

Kapiolani Womens Center was awarded the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the doctors who specialize in mammography and breast diagnostics the American College of Radiology placing Kapiolani in the top 8% nationally.
Kapiolani is a major teaching hospital for the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine Pediatric and OB/GYN programs.
48% of Kapiolani patients come from uninsured or underinsured families.
Kapiolani provided more than $3.20 million in uncompensated or charity care in fiscal year 2012.

The Kapiolani Health Foundation supports the charitable mission of its nonprofit hospital affiliate, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, by raising funds to provide the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Region with specialty medical care, life-saving equipment, community outreach and education, and to further local research.
