About the Organization
Founded in 1938, BHN is a large not-for-profit organization of 1300 employees and a $55M annual budget. Only 10.5% of our income is used to cover administrative expenses. BHN provides comprehensive behavioral health (BH) services in all four counties of Western Massachusetts by way of 52 programs at 57 different physical addresses. BHN holds formal business agreements or memoranda of understanding with 80 organizations and informal relationships or collaborations with another 92 partners. In 2013, we served 33,000 individuals76:24 ratio of adults to children. BHN offers behavioral health programs and services in three broad areas: 1. Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities 2. Substance Use Disorders 3. Mental Health Disorders. Behavioral Health Network provides services to children, adults and families. In 2014 we provided service to 30,449 individuals in six major area including: 2,948 for addiction services, 2,116 community outreach, 9,210 for emergency services, 2,692 forensics, 12,530 outpatient, and 474 Residential and supports 479 Integration. BHN has an increasingly diverse board of directors of 17 local business persons, human services experts, and representation by our persons served.
About the Community
The City of Springfield is the economic center of Western Massachusetts. It is home to Massachusetts' largest Fortune 100 company, MassMutual and to Merriam Webster, the first and most widely read American-English dictionary. Springfield is also home Massachusetts' third largest employer, Baystate Health, with over 10,000 employees. Baystate is the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine. Springfields Knowledge Corridor boasts the second-largest concentration of higher learning institutions in the United States, with 32 universities and liberal arts colleges and over 160,000 university students. Within the City of Springfield itself are three well-regarded private colleges and universities: Springfield College, Western New England University, and American International College. In 2010, Springfield was cited as the 4th "Greenest City" in the United States the largest city cited in the Top 10. Springfield features over 2,400 acres (10 km2) of parkland distributed among 35 urban parks, including the grand, 735 acres (297.4 ha) Forest Park. Springfield is home to five distinct museums at The Quadrangle, along with the ornate Springfield Public Library. Springfield's music scene is eclectic. It featured a notable heavy rock scene, from which the bands Staind, and The Acacia Strain rose to national prominence. Jazz and blues rival rock in popularity. Each summer, the Springfield-headquartered Hampden Bank sponsors the annual Hoops City Jazz & Art Festival, a three-day event that draws approximately 30,000 people to Metro Center to hear varieties of different jazz music.
