About the Organization
The University of Virginia Health System Physicians Group (UPG) is the physician group practice of UVA which provides financial, clinical and administrative services for clinicians allowing UVA physicians and advance practice providers to focus on delivering high quality patient care within UVA Health System and affiliated regional primary and specialty care practices.
Founded in 1979 as a nonprofit supporting organization to UVA, UPG performs a broad scope of functions including billing and collections, primary and specialty care practice management, competitive benefits for providers, commercial payer contract negotiations, clinical outreach business development and other supporting services to UVA Health System.
Although a separate legal entity from UVA, UPG works collaboratively with the University, UVA School of Medicine, UVA School of Nursing and UVA Medical Center which is ranked as the #1 hospital in Virginia for
2016-2017 by U.S. News and World Report.
UPG boasts 1200+ providers, who serve patients at the main UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville and in the 24 primary and specialty care locations throughout Charlottesville and Central and Northern Virginia. UPG clinic locations include Culpeper, Richmond, the Shenandoah Valley, Louisa, Winchester and Haymarket (Prince
William County). Additional future openings are planned throughout Virginia.
Through partnership with UVA School of Medicine, UPG physicians may have the opportunity for faculty appointments with sponsoring departments.
