About the Community
Junction City is a tree-lined community in the beautiful Flint Hills of northeast Kansas with a population of 24,000 people and a service area population of 40,000 (not including the military and their dependents on Ft. Riley, an adjacent army post). Junction City sits on the west side of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers, at the point where they meet to form the Kansas River.
Junction City has an award-winning school system (8 blue-ribbon schools) with academics and extracurricular activities that are well-supported by the community.
Located along I-70, Junction City is one hour from Topeka, two hours from Kansas City and Wichita respectively, and adjacent to Fort Riley (home of "The Big Red One") and Manhattan (home of Kansas State University).
Sports, entertainment arts and history are abundant and active in the area. See a show at the C.L. Hoover Opera House in Junction City, take in a ballgame at historic Rathert Stadium, or watch big-time collegiate sports at Big-12 member Kansas State University. You can experience the history of the old west at the Calvary Museum on Ft. Riley or at nearby Old Abilene Town.
Located 5 miles south of Milford Lake. With over 15,000 surface acres of water and 163 miles of shoreline, Milford Lake is the state's largest lake and offers many diverse recreational opportunities including camping, cabin rental, marinas, boating, swimming, fishing, playgrounds, hunting, hiking, wildlife watching, off-road vehicle trails, bicycle trails (including mountain biking), etc. It has hosted several of the nation's most prestigious fishing tournaments.
